Death of a Dynasty
Watch it as it crumbles. These are the last days of the Laker “Dynasty” as we know it. They fell short of the greatness of Jordan’s Bulls, but there is the potential to see a dismantling of the key players in much the same way as the Bulls went out.
In one scenario, Kobe could opt out (assuming his impending acquittal or community service or whatever); Jackson could walk away; Shaq could demand (and get) a trade, Payton and Malone sign with the highest bidding contenders; and there you go. The best management could hope for is plenty of prospects and cap room in exchange for Shaq. Here’s hoping they’ve learned a thing or two watching the Baby Bulls go through teething issues for the last half decade.
Now before I get my shamrock boxers all in a bunch, we need to look on the other side. Shaq could demand that the Lakers pay Phil’s ransom, and they could cave. Someone might just figure out the matrix-mind of Kobe and give him the things he’s been begging for (respect, isolation, a book of poetry, whatever) and resign him for the most money he could get anywhere. With those three in place, Payton won’t matter much. And make no mistake, he’s gone. Karl will likely follow the Diesel wherever he goes because he’s likely taken fewer hits this year than any other year combined. If some young talent is further developed and a free agent or two is brought in, they could be loaded up for another run.
But I’ll buy that when I see it. Reality most likely lies somewhere in between these scenarios. Shaq is probably there to stay. Kobe is not. Malone probably is happy staying, Payton is not. If he wants a real challenge and is willing to put his reputation on the line, Jackson could stay. My bet is he will not. Could they sign and trade Kobe for McGrady or Iverson? Not very likely. Can they use his money on a few other semi-stars to surround Shaq? I don’t see why not. If they are smart, they’ll keep at least one eye on building for the future. You can bet that’s what Jerry West would do. But alas, he’s walking in Memphis these days. So there’s no telling what they’ll do.
As a Celtic fan, I kinda hope they hire Jerry Krause to oversee the rebuilding project. Hey, a guy can dream can’t he? Regardless, this “dynasty” has seen its last days. They loaded up for one more run but got derailed early on and haven’t been able to get back on track since. Can they do it without Kobe? Not likely. Without Shaq and Phil? Sure; in about 5 to 6 years. Just about the time when the Celtics are polishing their rings. Ok, enough dreaming. I’m just going to enjoy watching this offseason.
